Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD vs LUBA 3 AWD: is the newer LUBA worth it?

Who each one is for

Both are Mammotion's big-lawn, all-wheel-drive mowers, and on paper they share a lot: the same 80% slope rating, the same twin-disc 400 mm cut and the same three-year warranty. The difference is generation.

The Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD is the current model. It suits large, sloping gardens with a mix of open lawn and areas close to trees, hedges or the house, and owners who don't want to install anything beyond the charging station.

The Mammotion LUBA 2 AWD is the previous generation. It suits open, sloping lawns where RTK works well, buyers who find one well below the price of a LUBA 3, and the few gardens over 5,000 m² that need the 10000X.

Navigation: the biggest difference

The LUBA 2 AWD positions itself with RTK satellite corrections, from either the base station in the box or Mammotion's network RTK service over 4G, and uses cameras to spot obstacles. There's no LiDAR. That works well on open lawns but can struggle where tall trees or buildings block the sky.

The LUBA 3 AWD 3000 and 5000 combine network RTK with a 360° LiDAR scanner and two cameras. LiDAR measures distances to fixed features, so the mower keeps its position in exactly the shaded, built-up spots where RTK is weakest. There's no base station in the box; if your mobile signal is poor, Mammotion sells one separately.

The LUBA 3 AWD 1500 is the exception. It has no network RTK and relies on LiDAR and cameras alone, with a smaller motor and much less area per charge. Treat it as a different machine: fine for an enclosed garden full of walls and hedges, less suited to a wide open lawn. Our navigation guide explains the trade-offs.

Lawn size

The LUBA 3 AWD is rated for 1,500–5,000 m² across its three versions. The LUBA 2 AWD covers 3,000–10,000 m², so it's the only one of the two for a lawn well above 5,000 m². For anything smaller, the LUBA 3 covers the same ground.

Slopes and cutting

There's nothing to choose between them on slopes: both are all-wheel drive and rated for 80%, about 39 degrees. See our slopes guide for why you should still leave a margin on wet grass.

Cutting is also close. Both cut 400 mm wide with app-controlled height from 25 mm to 70 mm. Mammotion's data lists full edge cutting for the LUBA 2 AWD; it doesn't make the same claim in the LUBA 3 data we hold.

4G, subscription and security

Both have 4G built in, and Mammotion says no subscription is needed to mow. The LUBA 3 AWD includes 36 months of data against 12 months on the LUBA 2. That matters more than it sounds: on the LUBA 3 3000 and 5000, 4G carries the RTK corrections, while the LUBA 2 can fall back on its included base station once its data runs out. Noise and weight

Mammotion quotes 70 dB(A) for the LUBA 3 AWD, which is loud for a robot mower. It doesn't publish a noise figure for the LUBA 2 AWD, so there's no fair comparison to make. Both are heavy, at 19 kg for the LUBA 3 and 18.6 kg–19.1 kg for the LUBA 2.

Warranty and price

Both carry Mammotion's 3 years warranty, which its UK warranty statement says includes the battery. The LUBA 3 AWD currently starts from £1,999. The LUBA 2 AWD had an RRP of £2,399–£4,099; the price table above shows whatever stock we can find.

Verdict

For a new purchase, choose the LUBA 3 AWD, and pick the 3000 or 5000 rather than the 1500 unless your garden is small and enclosed. LiDAR on top of network RTK is a real step up for gardens with trees and buildings, and the extra two years of 4G data matter because the LUBA 3 relies on it for positioning.

The LUBA 2 AWD is still a capable mower for open, sloping lawns. Buy one only if it's clearly cheaper than a comparable LUBA 3, or if your lawn is so big that only the 10000X covers it. It's not the right choice for a garden hemmed in by tall trees.
