How it navigates and sets up

The 405X follows a perimeter wire laid around the lawn and around beds or other areas it should avoid. It has no satellite positioning, so it isn't affected by trees, fences or buildings blocking the sky. Installation is the main job: you can peg the wire yourself or have a Husqvarna dealer lay it. Husqvarna rates it for 600 m² and slopes up to 40% inside the working area, with a much lower limit along the wire. It weighs 9.7 kg.

Cutting

It cuts with 3 pivoting razor blades on a disc, across a 220 mm path. Height runs from 20 mm to 50 mm, and adjustment is electric rather than a manual dial, which makes seasonal changes easier. Husqvarna quotes a sound level of 62 dB(A) and a mowing time of 50 min per charge.

App, connectivity and security

This is where the 405X earns its premium over the 305. The Automower Connect app connects over the built-in cellular link as well as Bluetooth, so you can start, park or reschedule the mower from anywhere. Husqvarna lists temporary stay-out zones, GPS theft tracking, an alarm and a PIN lock, plus voice control through Amazon Alexa, Google Home.
