How it navigates and sets up
The Automower 305 follows a perimeter wire laid around the edge of the lawn and around anything it must avoid, such as beds or ponds. Husqvarna's dealers can install the wire, or you can peg it down yourself; see our installation guide for what's involved. There's no satellite positioning, so trees and buildings don't affect it.
Husqvarna rates it for 600 m² and slopes up to 40% inside the working area, with a much lower limit along the wire (see "Claims vs reality" above). It weighs 9.4 kg, easy to carry to a second lawn.
Cutting
It uses 3 pivoting razor blades across a 220 mm cut. Small, sharp blades cutting little and often is the approach Husqvarna has used for years, and it suits a lawn mown several times a week. The blades pivot back if they strike something hard, limiting damage, and they're quick to replace. Height runs from 20 mm to 50 mm, set manually on the mower. Husqvarna quotes 59 dB(A), quiet enough for most evening schedules.
App, connectivity and security
The 305 uses Automower Connect@Home, which talks to the mower over Bluetooth, so you need to be in or near the garden to change schedules. The optional Connect Kit adds a cellular connection and must be fitted by a dealer. Security is an alarm and PIN code; there's no GPS tracking. What does the Automower 305E NERA add over the cheaper Automower 305?
The Husqvarna Automower 305E NERA adds a wire-free option, the EdgeCut disc, electric height adjustment and a Wi-Fi app connection, but the older Husqvarna Automower 305 handles steeper slopes and costs much less.
The 305 is a boundary-wire mower only. You peg or bury a wire around the lawn and any beds, and it has no satellite navigation to upgrade to. The 305E NERA comes in two versions: a newer wire-free one that uses cloud RTK over Wi-Fi, and an earlier boundary-wire one that can be converted with Husqvarna's EPOS Plug-in.
Cutting is where the NERA model pulls ahead on paper. It has a second, rear EdgeCut disc for closer edges, and height adjusts electrically from the app between 20 mm and 55 mm. On the 305 you set height by hand, up to 50 mm.
Connectivity differs too. The 305 uses the Bluetooth-based Automower Connect@Home app, so you need to be near the mower to change settings unless a dealer fits a Connect Kit. The 305E NERA connects over Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth.
The 305 has the advantage on slopes: Husqvarna rates it for 40% inside the lawn against 30% for the NERA. It also weighs less and is quoted slightly quieter.
The 305 is run-out stock from £699, against £1,549 for the 305E NERA. If you're happy with a wire, the 305 at a real discount is good value. If you want to avoid the wire or want neater edges, the NERA is the one to choose.

Does the Automower 305 need a boundary wire?
Yes. The 305 is a perimeter-wire mower. The wire marks the edge of the lawn and goes around flower beds and other areas it must avoid. There is no wire-free option for this model.
Can I control the Automower 305 from my phone?
Yes, but only nearby. It uses the Automower Connect@Home app over Bluetooth. Husqvarna sells a Connect Kit, fitted by a dealer, that adds a cellular connection for control away from home.
What is the difference between the Automower 305 and the 310 Mark II?
On Husqvarna's spec sheets they share the same cutting width, height range, weight and mowing time per charge. The main difference is rated area: 600 m² for the 305 and 1,000 m² for the 310 Mark II.
Is the Automower 305 being discontinued?
Husqvarna still lists it in the UK, but at a campaign price and alongside newer wire-free models, which suggests stock is being run out. Warranty on a new unit is the normal two years.
