How it navigates and sets up
The 450X is a boundary-wire mower: the wire runs around the lawn and any obstacles, and there's no satellite positioning. That keeps it reliable under trees and next to buildings, but on a lawn big enough to need it, laying and maintaining the wire is a serious job, often done by a dealer. Cutting
It uses 3 pivoting razor blades on a disc, across a 240 mm cut, with electric height adjustment from 20 mm to 60 mm. Husqvarna lists 270 min of mowing per charge, a long run time that suits a big lawn, and a sound level of 59 dB(A).
App, connectivity and security
The Automower Connect app works over the built-in cellular link and Bluetooth. The 450X has GPS theft tracking, an alarm and a PIN lock. Weather protection is IPX4, so shelter from heavy rain is sensible.
Running costs, warranty and support

Should you still buy one?
Used, on a lawn that's already wired, and at a price that reflects its age, yes. Otherwise, the Husqvarna Automower 450V NERA from £4,898 is wire-free, adds a camera, and is rated for a larger lawn. If you do buy used, ask for the operating hours, when the blades and battery were last replaced, and whether the charging station and any spare wire are included. For a large wired lawn at lower cost, the Kress Mission Mega is a current option.

What changed between the original Automower 450X and the 450X NERA?
The biggest change is that the Husqvarna Automower 450X NERA can work without a boundary wire, while the original Husqvarna Automower 450X can't. Husqvarna now lists the old model only on a support page marked discontinued.
According to Husqvarna's spec tables, the differences are:
- Navigation: the 450X uses a boundary wire only. The 450X NERA comes as a wired mower or as a bundle with the EPOS Plug-in, which uses satellite RTK and virtual boundaries.
- Rated area: the 450X was rated for 5,000 m², the same as the wired 450X NERA. The wire-free bundle reaches 7,500 m² because it mows in lines.
- Obstacles: the 450X NERA adds radar object detection.
- Connectivity: both have built-in cellular and GPS tracking; the NERA adds Wi-Fi.
- Weather and slopes: the NERA is rated IPX5 against IPX4, and 50% inside the lawn against 45%. Along the boundary the NERA is rated for 25%, up from 15%.
Some things didn't change: both cut a 240 mm strip with electric height adjustment from 20 mm to 60 mm. One figure went the other way: Husqvarna quotes a longer run time per charge for the old 450X than for the NERA model.
If you own a working 450X on a wire you're happy with, there's little reason to switch. If you're buying new, note that Husqvarna names the Husqvarna Automower 450V NERA as the 450X NERA's replacement.

Is the Automower 450X discontinued?
Yes. Husqvarna UK shows it only on a support page marked discontinued. The 450X NERA followed it, and Husqvarna says the 450V NERA now replaces the 450X NERA.
How big a lawn can the 450X handle?
Husqvarna rated it for 5,000 m², plus or minus 20%. Many obstacles, narrow passages or slopes reduce what it can keep on top of.
Can the 450X work without a boundary wire?
Not according to Husqvarna's listings; its spec shows physical wire only. The 450X NERA with wire free technology and the 450V NERA are the wire-free options.
Does the 450X have remote control?
Yes. A built-in cellular connection lets the Automower Connect app reach it from anywhere, and it has GPS theft tracking.
