Do you need a robot mower garage?

Short answer: no, you don't need one. Robot mowers are designed to sit on their charging station in the rain, and the manufacturers rate them for it. A garage is a roof over the dock that keeps the worst of the weather, the sun and falling debris off the mower. It's a nice-to-have that makes the most sense for mowers with cameras or LiDAR, for docks in full sun, and for docks under trees.

What a robot mower garage is

Despite the name, a robot mower garage is usually just a canopy: a roof on legs or a frame that fits over the charging station, open at the front so the mower can drive in and out. Some brands call it a house, shelter or cover. Most are plastic, some are wood or metal. They don't have doors, and most don't enclose the mower on all sides.

A few mowers come with one: eufy includes a garage with the E15, and TerraMow with its V series. For most others, it's an optional extra from the manufacturer or a third party.

What a garage does

• Keeps off sun. A dark mower sitting in direct summer sun gets hot. Lithium-ion batteries dislike heat, and some mowers pause charging or delay mowing when they get too warm. Shade helps the battery and the plastics.
• Keeps off rain and debris. Leaves, seeds, blossom and bird droppings land on the mower and its sensors. A roof keeps the top surface and camera lenses cleaner, which matters more for vision and LiDAR mowers than for wired ones.
• Protects the charging contacts from some of the rain and dirt that cause poor connections.
• Tidies the look of the garden, which some people care about more than anything else here.

What a garage doesn't do

• Winter storage. An open-fronted roof doesn't keep frost, damp or cold air off the mower. Most manufacturers recommend storing the mower indoors over winter; see our winter storage guide.
• Security. Garages don't lock, and they can advertise that there's a mower inside. Use the PIN, alarm and tracking features instead (see robot mower theft and security).
• Make the mower more waterproof. The mower's IP rating already allows for rain. A garage won't change what the manufacturer says about mowing in wet weather.

Things to check before you buy one

Fit and docking

The mower has to drive into the charging station accurately and reverse or turn out again. A garage that's too low, too narrow or too far forward can block this. Manufacturer garages are sized for their own mowers; for a third-party one, check the internal height and width against the mower's dimensions, including any aerial, LiDAR dome or camera mast on top.

Also check the garage won't block access for cleaning the charging contacts, or stop you lifting the mower off.

Sensors and signal

This is the most important check for wire-free mowers:

• RTK and GNSS. Some RTK mowers need a clear view of the sky to get a position fix before leaving the dock. A solid roof directly over the antenna can delay that. If your mower has a separate RTK base station or antenna, keep it clear of the garage.
• Cameras and LiDAR. A garage that sits low over the front of the mower may block the view the mower uses to position itself as it leaves the dock.
• Rain sensors. A mower that decides whether to mow based on a rain sensor may not detect rain while under cover. Most will notice once they drive out, but check how your brand handles it.

Manufacturer garages for wire-free mowers are generally designed with these in mind. With a generic garage, you're relying on the seller's word.

Heat

A garage in full sun can trap heat if it's enclosed on several sides. Look for one that's open or ventilated, and position it with the opening away from prevailing wind and rain but not facing straight into the midday sun if you can help it.

Wind

Lightweight plastic garages can blow over or lift in gales. Most come with ground pegs or fix to the charging station base; use them.

When a garage makes sense

A garage is worth considering if:

• The charging station is in full sun for much of the day.
• It's under trees that drop leaves, sap, fruit or bird droppings.
• Your mower relies on cameras or LiDAR that need clean lenses.
• You care about how the dock looks from the house.

It's probably not worth it if:

• The dock is in a shaded, sheltered spot already.
• You have a basic wired mower with no cameras.
• The budget is tight: the money is better spent on a mower with enough rated area, or on spare blades.

Choosing where the dock goes

Where you put the charging station matters more than whether it has a roof. Place it on flat, firm ground with a straight run in and out, close to a power socket, away from sprinklers and downpipes, and with a clear view of the sky if the mower uses RTK.
