Satellite-guided robot mowers use RTK corrections to position themselves to within a few centimetres. Some need a reference station in the garden; others get corrections over 4G or Wi-Fi and offer a station as a fallback. What an RTK station does
RTK (real-time kinematic) positioning compares the satellite signals received by the mower with those received by a fixed reference at a known position. The difference is sent to the mower as a correction, which brings its accuracy down from metres to centimetres. The reference can be:
- your own station in the garden, often called a base or reference station; or
- a network of permanent stations, reached over 4G or Wi-Fi. This is network RTK.

Every listing shows the mower families the manufacturer says it works with. RTK hardware is not cross-compatible between brands, and some stations only work with particular generations of a range, so check your model carefully.
When buying one makes sense
- Your 4G or Wi-Fi signal is weak across part of the lawn and your mower offers a station as a fallback.
- You're adding satellite navigation to a mower that supports it as an upgrade.
- The station needs to move to a better spot, and an extension or wall mount gets it there.
- You're replacing a damaged station.
A station doesn't fix poor sky view over the lawn itself. If the mowing area is under heavy tree cover or tight against tall buildings, the mower will still struggle wherever it can't see enough satellites. In that case a mower that also uses cameras or LiDAR is usually the better answer.
Installation tips
Mount the station firmly so it can't move: if it shifts, the map shifts with it and you may need to remap. Keep the antenna clear of garage roofs and overhanging branches, and route cables where they won't be mown or chewed.

Frequently asked questions
Does my robot mower need an RTK station?
It depends on the model. Some RTK mowers come with a reference station in the box. Network RTK models get corrections over the internet and don't need one unless your mobile or Wi-Fi coverage is poor. Wired, vision-only and LiDAR-only mowers don't use RTK at all. The mower's spec table shows whether a base station is required.
Where should an RTK reference station go?
Somewhere with a wide, clear view of the sky, away from trees, high walls and the house, and within reach of mains power. A higher position, such as a wall or roof mount, often helps. Follow the manufacturer's distance limits from the mower's working area.
Can one reference station serve two mowers?
Some brands allow it, but it's brand-specific and model-specific. RTK stations are not interchangeable between brands.
What are antenna extension kits for?
They let you mount the station's antenna higher or further from the power supply, to get a clearer view of the sky. They're useful when the best spot for signal isn't near a socket.
